Over view:
The internist provides medical care for incoming internal medicine referrals and patients transferred to the internal medicine service from other in hospital services. He/She also provides consultations to ER staff and to other services on patients who have multiple problems. The internist will review records, formulate diagnostic and treatment plans, and communicate fully and completely with referral veterinarians, in house veterinarians on each service, and veterinary technical staff to provide seamless care for patients.
Responsibilities :
Communicate fully and promptly with re ferring veterinarians on cases referred to the internal medicine service. Most of this communication will be through detailed referral letters and progress reports.
Communicate at least daily with clients with animals in the hospital â" this includes updating financial estimates daily either directly or using veterinary staff
Communicate accurately and clearly with all clients about diagnostics, treatments, and costs associated with patient care
Complete accurate medical records in SOAP format with treatment plans on all animals seen before leaving at the end of the shift
Provide accurate case summaries and discharge instructions for cases that are seen.
Provide, direct and oversee patient medical care. This includes:
Determining client concerns and obtaining complete medical histories
Receiving and assessing patients and performing complete physical examinations
Developing a problem list, differential diagnostic list, and treatment and diagn ostic plan
Performing, ordering, and supervising medical and surgical procedures
Follow medical codes of ethics, rules of employee handbook, and laws related to veterinary medical care
Report adverse and unanticipated patient outcomes and events to the medical director promptly and accurately.
Update veterinarians that are continuing care on patients overnight in a clear and accurate manner through discussion during the shift change rounds.
Participate in mandatory doctor and all staff meetings
Participate when requested in the review process for other doctors and staff

Qualifications :
DVM or VMD degree from accredited veterinary college
Hold valid Texas state veterinary license
Residency training in Internal medicine
Passage of ACVIM board exam
