DUTIES:
The incumbent functions as Physi! cian Assistant (PA) in the Healthcare for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) section of Mental Health Care Line. As the PA, you will function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and serve as a highly skilled expert who provides medical management of patients with a variety of medical and mental health problems/conditions. You will assist physicians in the team by evaluating new and follow-up patients, performing histories and physical exams, ordering ancillary tests, providing new patient education, making telephone calls, writing prescriptions, interpreting and managing lab results, and coordinating operating room schedules. Major duties and responsibilities include:
 Perform preventive medicine examinations, treatments, tests or modalities to include physical examinations and the administration or supervision of immunizations.
 Manage common medical and mental health problems encountered in Primary Care settings, including all age-specific medical problems! .
 Perform patient education, preoperative and postoperative teaching, obtain medical clearance, and provide long-term follow-up care.
 Manage stable, chronic medical conditions (asthma, CAD, COPD, diabetes mellitus types I and II, etc.). Unstable conditions warrant notification of the MD.
 Prescribe all necessary medications within the pharmacy guidelines, excluding narcotics.
 Manage patients who are receiving short or long term anticoagulant treatment.
 Initiate consultations with medical specialists (surgeons, internists, psychiatrists and other specialties).
 Education individuals or groups about appropriate health maintenance topics (danger of self-harm in a patient, diabetic foot care, smoking cessation, etc.)
 Provide initial emergency care as appropriate for life-threatening emergencies (BLS, trauma management)
 Collect specimens for pathologic examination.
 Analyze a! nd interpret data, diagnoses, create problem lists and establish plans ! for the management of health care.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (may be required to work weekends, evenings, or other irregular tours of duty)
Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
a. Citizenship.
Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
b. Education or Training.
The candidate must meet one of the following:
(1)
A bachelorÂ's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA);
or
(2)
Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelorÂ's deg! ree in a health care occupation or a health-related science;
or
(3)
Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
c. Certification.
As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of PhysicianÂ's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.
d. Physical Standards.

e. English Language Proficiency.
PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as! required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
